What is Audyn?

Audyn is a desktop application for Windows and macOS that scans, indexes, and organizes your Ableton Live projects.

What Audyn does

Audyn reads your Ableton Live project files (.als) and extracts all the metadata they contain: tempo, key, time signature, tracks, plugins, clips, samples, and arrangement structure. This lets you search, filter, and browse your entire library without opening Ableton.

Beyond indexing, Audyn gives you tools to organize your work: collections to group projects, tags to label them, a progression system to track their status, a full version timeline to see your project history, and an arrangement view to visualize track layouts.

Search works across project names, BPM, key, plugins, tags, and any combination of filters.

What is an .als file?

An .als file is the project format used by Ableton Live. It contains the full session: tracks, instruments, effects, clips, automation, routing, and sample references.

.als → gzip → XML → metadata

Audyn reads these files directly to extract their contents. It supports projects created with Ableton Live 10, 11, and 12, across all editions (Intro, Standard, and Suite).

What Audyn extracts

When Audyn scans a project file, it extracts the following information:

Project properties

Tempo (BPM), key, time signature, duration, Ableton version used to create the project.

Tracks

All tracks in the session (MIDI, Audio, Group, and Return) with their names, colors, and folder hierarchy.

Devices and plugins

Every instrument, effect, and plugin on each track: native Ableton devices, VST2, VST3, and AU plugins, including racks and their nested chains.

Clips

Audio and MIDI clips with their positions, durations, and loop settings. For MIDI clips, individual note data is also extracted.

Samples

All audio files referenced in the project, including their file paths.

How scanning works

Scanning is the process Audyn uses to read and index your projects:

  1. 1You tell Audyn which folders contain your Ableton projects. It searches through them and all their subfolders to find every .als file.
  2. 2Each file that's new or has changed since the last scan is read and analyzed.
  3. 3The extracted metadata is indexed for instant access.
  4. 4Projects are automatically grouped by folder. All .als files in the same folder are treated as versions of a single project.
After the first scan, Audyn only processes files that have been added or modified. It also watches your folders in real time, so when you save a project in Ableton, the changes appear in Audyn automatically.

Your files are never modified

Audyn is read-only. It opens your .als files to read their contents, but never writes to them. Tags, notes, collections, and status are stored separately in Audyn's own database.

Even if you uninstall Audyn or delete its database, your .als files remain untouched.
